Instagram will tell you that a specific profile is “followed by” people you know, but it has no screen that lists all of your mutuals at once. Getting that complete list is a comparison job: your following list against your followers list, and the overlap between them.
Get your data the official way
In the Instagram app, go to Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Export your informationand request your followers and following lists — see Instagram’s own guide to reviewing and exporting your information for the current steps. You can choose JSON or HTML. Instagram emails a download link when the export is ready, usually within a few minutes to a few hours depending on how large your account is.
This is the part worth being stubborn about. Every “see your mutuals instantly” app that asks for your Instagram username and password is asking you to hand account access to a third party, which breaks Instagram’s Terms of Use and regularly gets accounts flagged. The official export gives you the same data with none of that risk.
Turn the export into two plain lists
Open the export and copy just the usernames into two lists, one username per line — one list for Following, one for Followers. Strip everything else: timestamps, profile URLs, display names. The comparison matches on exact values, so trailing punctuation or a stray “@” on one list but not the other will cause accounts to look unmatched when they are not.
Compare and read the overlap
Paste Following into List 1 and Followers into List 2, then compare. Four numbers come back and each answers a different question:
- Intersection — your mutual followers. Accounts in both lists.
- Only in List 1 — accounts you follow that do not follow you back.
- Only in List 2 — accounts that follow you that you do not follow back.
- Union — everyone you have any connection with, in either direction.
The overlap percentage shown alongside the results is a decent one-glance health metric for an account: a creator account typically has far more followers than mutuals, while a personal account usually skews toward a high mutual rate.
Keeping it accurate
Two things cause false results. First, exports taken days apart drift — follow and unfollow activity between the two exports shows up as differences that are not really differences. Export both lists in the same session. Second, usernames are case-insensitive on Instagram but exports are not always consistent about casing, so leave case sensitivity off when comparing or you will see the same account listed as unmatched on both sides. If two identical-looking usernames still refuse to match, check the export for invisible characters.
Tracking mutuals over time
Save each export as a dated text file — followers-2026-09-28.txt— and you can answer follow-up questions later without re-exporting. Comparing this month’s followers against last month’s shows exactly who unfollowed you, which is covered in how to see who unfollowed you on Instagram. The comparison itself is identical; only the two lists you feed it change.
Nothing is uploaded
The comparison runs entirely in your browser tab. The Instagram follower checker never connects to Instagram, never asks for credentials, and never transmits the usernames you paste — it only compares the two lists you already downloaded yourself. If you want the underlying mechanics, it is the same engine described in how to compare two lists online.
Paste your two exported lists.

How do I see mutual followers on Instagram?
Export your followers and following lists from Instagram's Accounts Center, paste both into a list comparison tool, and read the intersection — those accounts appear in both lists and are your mutuals.
Does Instagram show mutual followers directly?
Instagram shows mutual connections on individual profiles ("Followed by…") but has no screen listing all of your own mutuals at once. Comparing your two exported lists is how you get the complete set.
Is it safe to use an app that asks for my Instagram login to check this?
No. Apps requesting your Instagram password violate Instagram's terms and put your account at risk. Instagram's own data export gives you the same information through an official channel.
How do I find people who don't follow me back?
Same comparison, different result panel. With Following in List 1 and Followers in List 2, the only-in-List-1 result is everyone you follow who doesn't follow you back.
How long does the Instagram export take?
Usually minutes to a few hours depending on account size. Instagram emails a download link when the file is ready.
